Chariots of Fire

The First 'Chariots of Fire' Race
10th May, 1983

The first 'Chariots of Fire' race was run somewhat differently from the race today. Competitors started at the East end of the Campanile (the Rubrics side), ran down to the Rubrics and touched them. This is no longer done. The competitors turned at the Rubrics and ran back through the Campanile. They then branched left and right to run around the grass lawns of Front Square, joined up again at Regent House and sprinted to the finish line at the Library Square side of the Campanile.

The Men's race was run in heats, two athletes in each heat. The fastest four proceeded to the semi-finals and the winners of each semi-final to the final. Since there were only six women in the Ladies race, the winner was decided on the basis of the fastest from the heats. The winners received much sought after tickets to Trinity Ball.
