Dublin University Harriers and Athletic Club (DUHAC) are having a remarkable season.
Having narrowly missed out on the Road Relay title in November at NUI Maynooth, DUHAC Ladies won the Irish University Athletics Association (IUAA) Indoors Track & Field Championship in December. This was followed by the IUAA Ladies Cross Country title at the University of Ulster (Coleraine) in March. DUHAC Ladies last won a Cross Country or Track & Field title in 1984 when they did the double.
"The Cheetahs" Cross Country Trophy, a bronze sculpture of two cheetahs in full flight by the late James Osborne, was presented to the IUAA in 1992 by Prof. Cyril J. Smyth, Hon. President of the Club. After 10 long years "The Cheetahs" are back in TCD!
In 1997 the IUAA inaugurated the Combined Cross Country Championship for Men and Women. "The Badger" trophy, by the Irish sculptor Ruth Romney, was presented to the IUAA by Prof. Smyth during his presidency. At UU, TCD won this combined trophy for the first time. The DUHAC men last won an intervarsity title in 1985 when they took the Track & Field title during the centenary year of the club.
