An Unexpected Eclipse of UCD

The form book counted for little when in the fifth annual colours athletic match at College Park last night, Dublin University won back the Dawson Trophy from UCD with a thoroughly deserved 96-76 pts victory. The unexpected eclipse of the UCD trackmen, notably sprinter, Iggy O'Muircheartaigh whose only success was in the 440, was mainly the reason why Trinity levelled the series at two-all with one match drawn.
After the Inter-Varsity championships in Galway recently, UCD were rated favourites, but we reckoned without the grid and spirit of the Trinity sprinters, Ian Rees and Steve Austen.
They finished ahead of a sluggish O'Muircheartaigh in both the 100 and 220, thus reversing Galway form with the NACA champion, who scored a treble when they last met. Rees was expected to be Trinity's best bet in the furlong, but he surprised not alone O'Muircheartaigh, but Austen as well in the 100.
One UCD trackman who did not fail, however, was Tom Power. In both the 880 and mile he produced a great finishing straight butst to win comfortably each time. The anticipated thriller between Power and Trinity captain Tony Shillington, over 880 did not materialise.
Shillington, who had earlier won the 440 hurdles, could find nothing extra when the pressure went on, and it was left to another Trinity runner, Brian O'Neill, to follow Power home, just as he had done in the mile.
Besides Rees and Power, a double was recorded by the Trinity weightman, Liam Hatt, who took the Discus and Shot. With a putt of 45ft. 9ins., he set a meeting record in the Shot, beating Kevin Prendergast's 1961 figure of 45ft. 8¼ins.
This was one of the five records set during a meeting which was always interesting. The others came in the 220 (Rees), Long Jump (R. Boelens), Triple Jump (S. O'Dwyer), and Pole Vault (L. Gleeson).
The first-ever women's match between the universities was curtailed, for the UCD resources were limited. Trinity won easily by 21-8 points.
