Robert & Elliott Jephson

Hon Secretary DUHAC.

Recently I visited some duhac reports on athletic history. I have newspaper cuttings of athletic events in tcd - c.1944/45, so here's some info.

Looking in a drawer I see I have a medal whose obverse is of a runner and around the edge is Irish Amateur Athletic Union. On the reverse it has inscribed winner HEJephson winner 1944. So that would be the Eire 440 championship I believe.

My brother Robert won the 100 & 220 and I won the 440 also in the 1945 Eire Championship.

I considered Robert was a better runner than I, and if I hadn't had to leave and work in London that I would have developed into a good half mile man as I won some of those event in the College races during my engring yrs.

In one Irish Press release I see a head line saying Trinity Athlete`s five prizes for J.V. Luce College Races on June 7th 1944 Events being 120 yds hurdles - InterClub Relay -Discus -Javelin -Long Jump (Quite an achievement) I see Robert won the 100yd Freshman and 120yd flat while I won the 440yds at these same races.

Then I have another medal with the 4 provinces insignia in the centre on the obverse while the reverse says Irish Senior Championship 1945 440 yds winner HEJephson. I believe that contest was in Belfast.

I think your reports also should have mentioned a very tough contest against Oxford University on Tues July 9 1946 -where the contest would have gone to Oxford Univ. if I hadn't come from a long way behind and overtook the 440 man in the last leg of the final relay race. It concludes by saying Jean Montgomery provided a fine dinner in the Dining Hall. She was as famous as Tom Maguire to all the students at that time!

Being 80 now I play golf almost daily in Canada.

-God bless,

Elliott Jephson.
