Dublin University Harriers and Athletic Club
Club Rules
"Pre 1990"

- Title
- The Club shall be known as the Dublin University Harriers and Athletic Club, hereafter referred to as "the Club".
- Object
- The objective of the Club is the promotion of Amateur Athletics and Cross-Country running in the University.
- Address
- For the purposes of correspondence, the address shall be:
Box 55, Regent House, Trinity College, Dublin 2
- Affiliation
- The Club shall be affiliated to:
- D.U.C.A.C.
and shall adhere to any rulings that the Central Athletic Committee shall make.
- I.U.A.A.
and shall run its Intervarsity matches according to the rules of this association.
- B.L.E.
and shall run its non-Intervarsity competition, and general activities according to the rules of this association.
- Colours
- The Club Colours shall be:
- White vest, with D.U.H.A.C. printed in maroon on the chest, bounded by a laurel in French grey, bounded by three maroon bands.
- Maroon/Black shorts.
- Membership
- Membership of the Club is confined to amateurs, as defined by the I.A.A.F. There shall be seven different categories of membership:
- Student Members
This category is confined to those students currently taking an undergraduate or postgraduate course of study in the College, and who have paid their capitation fees to the University. Only those members are eligible to compete for D.U.H.A.C. in intervarsity competition. They are also able, if they so wish, to compete for D.U.H.A.C. in B.L.E. competition, providing that they comply with the B.L.E. eligibility requirements. Student members shall receive the Club Newsletter twice a year and be provided all necessary facilities for the furtherance of their athletic careers in Trinity College. Student Membership shall be £1.00, and linked to the D.U.C.A.C. subscription.
- Graduate Members
These members shall be graduates of Trinity College. They are eligible to compete for D.U.H.A.C. in B.L.E. competition, if they so wish, and if they meet the B.L.E. eligibility requirements. Graduate members shall receive the Club Newsletter twice yearly, and shall enjoy full use of the College Sports Facilities. Graduate Membership shall be £45.00, and linked to the D.U.C.A.C. subscription.
- Associate Members
Graduates who wish to maintain their association with the Club may do so by becoming Associate Members. Associate members shall receive the Club Newsletter twice yearly, and shall at all times be kept informed as tho the Clubs Activities. Associate membership shall be £15.00, and linked to the D.U.C.A.C. subscription.
- Patron Members
A candidate for election to Patron Membership shall have had a distinguished career with the Club, have won Club Colours and have been a Club Officer for at least two years. Patron Members have automatic right to sit on the Committee of the Club, and may be nominated as D.U.H.A.C. representatives where requisite. Patron Membership shall be restricted to twelve persons, and Patron Members shall be recorded in all Club records. Patron Members may be elected at General Meetings of the Club from the general body of members present and voting. Patron members shall receive the Club Newsletter twice yearly, and invitations to the Annual D.U.H.A.C. Dinner and the college races. Patron members shall, at all times be kept informed as to the activities of the Club, and invited as honored guests to any functions that are held. Patron Membership shall be £100.00, and linked to the D.U.C.A.C. subscription.
- Honorary Members
Where the Committee deems that a particular person would be of especial value as a Club member, that person shall be granted Honorary Membership of the Club. Honorary Members may stand for election to the Committee and act as Club Representatives where requisite. Honorary members shall receive the Club Newsletter twice yearly, and invitations to the Annual D.U.H.A.C. Dinner and the College races. Honorary members shall, at all times be kept informed as to the activities of the Club, and invited as honored guests to any functions that are held. All past presidents of the Club, shall be Honorary Life Members of the Club.
- Pheidippidians
These shall be members of the Club who may not necessarily have undergone a course of study in the college. Pheidippidian Membership shall be at the discretion of the Pheidippidian Sub-Committee comprising the College Physical recreation o cer, the D.U.H.A.C. President and the chairman of the Trinity Pheidippidians. While willing and eligible a Trinity Pheidippidian may represent D.U.H.A.C. in B.L.E. competition. Pheidippidians will receive the Club Newsletter twice yearly, and invitation to the College Races. Pheidippidian Subscription shall be at the discretion of the Trinity Pheidippidian Sub-Committee.
- Staff Members
These members shall be staff of Trinity College. They are eligible to compete for D.U.H.A.C. in B.L.E. competition, if they so wish, and if they meet the B.L.E. eligibility requirements. Staff members shall enjoy full use of the College Sports Facilities. They shall receive the Club Newsletter twice yearly, and invitations to the Annual D.U.H.A.C. Dinner and The College Races. Staff Membership shall be £45.00, and linked to the D.U.C.A.C. subscription.
- Members are only eligible to be members of the Club where they have paid the appropriate subscription ( payable on the first day of the Michelmas term ), and where their membership is in accordance with the rules of D.U.C.A.C., I.U.A.A. and B.L.E.
- Membership Rules
- Members are only eligible to be members of the Club where they have paid the appropriate subscription, and where their membership is in accordance with the rules of D.U.C.A.C., I.U.A.A. and B.L.E..
- Subscriptions are payable on the first day of the Michaelmas Term. Any member whose subscription has not been paid by the first day of the following Hilary Term shall cease to be a member of the Club, and shall not be re-admitted till all arrears have been paid. No person shall compete for the Club whose subscription remains unpaid after 5th November.
- Annual General Meeting
- The annual general meeting shall be held in Trinity Term. The following shall be the order of business:
- Read and confirm the minutes of the last meeting.
- Any matters arising from the minutes.
- Hon. Secretary's Report.
- Hon. Treasurer's Report.
- President's Report.
- Election of Officers for the coming year, as provided in rule 9 of these Rules.
- Presentation of Awards.
- Any other business.
- Sincere and valiant efforts to increase the Annual Revenue of the Pavilion Bar.
- At any general meeting of the Club fifteen members shall form a quorum. Business to be placed on the Agenda, and nominations for Officers and Patron members shall be handed in to the Hon. Secretary seven days before the meetings. He/she shall post the nominations and agenda on the Club Notice-board at least three days before the meeting.
- The paid up members of the Club shall be entitled to nominate and vote in the election of Officers and Patron Members, and on any issue of general concern. Where decision is not unanimous, elections shall be by ballot. The Hon. Secretary shall convene a General Meeting at any time if so directed by the Executive Committee, or on the written requisition of not less than twenty members.
- Officers of the Club
- The affairs of the Club shall be managed by an Executive Committee. The following shall be the Officers of the Club:
- President of D.U.H.A.C.
- Vice President of D.U.H.A.C.
- Captain of D.U.H.A.C.
- Ladies Captain of D.U.H.A.C.
- Hon. Secretary of D.U.H.A.C.
- Hon. Treasurer of D.U.H.A.C.
- Harriers Captain of D.U.H.A.C.
- Field events Captain of D.U.H.A.C.
- Social Secretary of D.U.H.A.C.
- College Races Chairman
- Patron or Honorary Members
- Club Coaches
- The President and Vice-President shall not be undergraduates. The Captains shall be capitated students of the University. Two or more o ces may be held simultaneously, so that it it envisaged that there would never be more than fifteen executive members (excluding Patron and Honorary Members). There should be at least five student Committee Members, and at least three non-student Committee Members. Any vacancy on the committee shall be filled by co-option.
- The executive Committee shall hold office for one year, but shall be eligible, in whole or in part, for annual re-election. No Committee Member shall hold the same office for more than three years except in exceptional circumstances.
- Committee Meetings
- The Hon. Secretary shall convene the Executive Committee for the transaction of general business not less than once a month during term, and the agenda shall be posted at least two days beforehand. At Committee meetings five shall form a quorum.
- Sub-Committees
- Where deemed requisite, Sub-Committees shall be established to investigate special matters such as Coaching and Standards, Finance, Facilities, the College Races, Scholarships, etc.
- Finance
- All funds of the Club shall be lodged at the College Green Branch of the AIB Bank or another Bank approved by D.U.C.A.C., and all cheques shall be signed by at least two Committee Members.
- Barring exceptional circumstances, this account shall be maintained in credit.
- A balance sheet shall be prepared in each year by the Hon. Treasurer, and the accounts of the Club shall be audited annually by auditors approved by D.U.C.A.C.. A copy of the said balance sheet shall be sent to the Hon. secretary D.U.C.A.C.
- Award of Club Colours
- Any Club member who fills any two of the following requirements, shall be deemed eligible for the award of D.U.H.A.C. Colours:
- Represented D.U.H.A.C. in at least two matches of the same nature against University College Dublin.
- Represented D.U.H.A.C. in at least two Intervarsity championships of the same nature.
- Won any event in the above matches.
- Have been a member on a winning team in any of the above matches.
- Represented his/her country in any event.
- A member to whom Colours have been awarded shall be entitled to wear the Club tie with the distinctive University Crest ( Harp and Crown ) embroidered thereon, and the D.U.H.A.C. blazer. These may be purchased at the members expense.
- Award of University Colours
- The Captains Committee of D.U.H.A.C. elects University 'Pinks' each year. The Captain of D.U.H.A.C. shall nominate Pinks for anyone who fulfills the following requirements:
- Represented his/her country.
- Achieved national-ranking standards on at least two occasions in the same season.
- Broken a college record.
- 1st place in any Intervarsity athletic event.
- Earned D.U.H.A.C. Colours.
- Where a D.U.H.A.C. member is awarded University Colours for athletics, the Club shall buy that member the Pinks scarf and tie, as recognition of the achievement.
- Scholarships
- Under a special scholarship scheme, the Club shall endeavor to provide a number of bursaries each year to finance young athletes who have just completed secondary education, and who are eligible for academic admission to University. A special scholarship fund shall be maintained, in accordance with D.U.C.A.C. authorities, to administer the bestowing of grants to particularly talented athletes who might otherwise be forced to continue their athletic career elsewhere.
- The scholarship scheme shall be run by a special committee consisting of a small number of committee members and I.U.A.A. and B.L.E. advisors. The Club shall use every means possible to increase this scholarship fund.
- If any benefactor or sponsor wishes to provide a athletic scholarship, suitable media publicity shall be arranged to announce details of such.
- The scholarships shall include lecture fees, a small maintenance, access to all requisite medical, physiotherapy, testing and psychological facilities, and the provision of an adequate degree of top-level coaching competition.
- The objective of the scholarship scheme shall be primarily the development of the athlete, and while he/she will be expected to make certain stated contributions towards the activities and promotion of the Club, he/she may not be put under undue pressure because of his bursary. Where the subject fails to rise with his year, the scholarship received shall be suspended. If the subject is considered not to be giving a su cient attention to academic advancement, the scholarship shall likewise be withdrawn.
- Where the subject is injured, or unable to compete due to some extenuating circumstances, the scholarship shall be continued, and further funds a orded, if required, to bring him/her back to fitness as soon as possible.
- Where the subject is eligible for a Higher Education grant, this money shall be withdrawn from the scholarship and saved in a fund to increase international competition for the athlete in question.;
- Attire
- Club members shall be entitled to wear the following:
- The D.U.H.A.C. racing strip.
- The D.U.H.A.C. tie.
- The D.U.H.A.C. scarf.
- Those members who have attained Club Colours may also wear the Colours tie ( a Club tie with the University crest emblazoned thereon), and the Colours Blazer.
- Knights of the Campanile - D.U.C.A.C. Executive - Hereans
- The Club shall furnish any Club member who is elected to the Council of the Knights of the Campanile, any lady member who is elected to the Hereans, or any member who is elected to the D.U.C.A.C. Executive with the appropriate scarf, in recognition of their achievement.
- Club Book
- A Club Book shall be maintained, listing the result and details of every competitive excursion by the Club, and containing as much photographs or items of interest as possible.
- Club Photograph
- A Club Photograph shall be taken each year and stored on the Club Book and within the auspices of D.U.C.A.C.
- Competition
- The committee shall strive to present a decent regular degree of competition, open to all Club Members. In particular the Club shall compete in or organize:
- Colours matches in Cross-Country and Track and Field athletics
- Intervarsity competition in
- Outdoor Track and Field athletics
- Indoor Track and Field athletics
- Road-Relay championships
- Cross-Country running
- A triangular Track and Field match against Queen's University, Belfast and Edinburgh University.
- The Trinity Relays inter-Club meeting on College Park.
- The College Dash around Front Square ("The Chariots of Fire")
- The College Races
- Coaching
- The Committee of the Club shall arrange adequate coaching and facilities for all standards, in the relaxed and friendly spirit of University athletics.
- Copy of rules
- A copy of these Rules shall be presented to each member upon joining the Club, and copies shall be maintained in the Pavilion and under the auspices of D.U.C.A.C.
- Amendment of these Rules
- No amendment of these rules, whether by way of variation, addition or repeal, shall be made, except by resolution of a General Meeting of the Club, passed, after due notice of motion, by a majority of not less than two-thirds of those present and voting.
- Special Circumstances
- The committee shall decide any Question as to the interpretation of the Rules and deal with any matter not definitely provided for therin.
