The Iain Morrison Trophy for Inspirational Performance.
|
This trophy is awarded annually to a DUHAC athlete who has shown commitment and dedication to their personal training throughout the season resulting in performances at Intervarsity, Colours and internal DUHAC competition that are representative of their true ability. This, combined with an active role in the organisation and development of DUHAC, either on or off the committee, is the criteria on which the trophy is awarded. These criteria make the awarding of the trophy to people of all standards possible, as being the best athlete within DUHAC doesn't necessarily fulfill the requirements for winning the trophy.
The nomination of names for the award are made by DUHAC members and are accompanied by a statement supporting the nomination of the athlete being nominated. The committee then shortlists what they consider to be the top five most suitable nominees. The entire club votes by secret ballot for one of the five nominees whom they think is worthy of the award. This usually takes place in Trinity Term.

| Iain Morrison: |
|
In the late Spring of 1999, when Iain Morrison was coming to the end of his long and very distinguished career with DUHAC it was thought fitting that he should be asked to present a trophy to DUHAC to represent what he had epitomised during his time in DUHAC. Iain had started out as a runner on the third team at the Road Relay Championships in 1992. To put it diplomatically, Iain wasn't what one might describe as a runner. Despite this Iain wasn't put off and got himself elected onto the DUHAC committee as the 'Trinity Week Representative' at the end of his first year in college. Over the years Iain progressed up through the committee ranks to Treasurer in 1994/95 and Captain in 1995/96 and 1996/97. During these years Iain had worked tirelessly to lay the foundations for the current day DUHAC. He had also dedicated himself to his training and had risen up through the ranks to become one of a handful of athletes to run sub 14:30 on the three mile leg at the Road Relay Championships. Iain won individual Gold in the 1500m indoor Championships in 1997 and finished 7th in the Intervarsity Cross Country in 1998. He ended his running career in the DUHAC vest with individual bronze in the 5000m at the Track & Field Championships in 1999. Iain had studied medicine whilst in Trinity and is currently training to become a General Practitioner.
|
| 1998/1999 Season: Muriel Cummins |
|
Muriel Cummins was in 2nd year Occupational Therapy when she became the first winner of the Iain Morrison Trophy. Muriel had shown dedication to both her personal training and to DUHAC throughout the year, resulting in a number of fine achievements in the DUHAC vest. Having trained steadily over the summer Muriel started the year with a solid base behind her resulting in her selection for the first team in the Road Relay Championships. She went on to maintain her form resulting in significantly improved performances at the Indoor Championships, relative to her performances the previous season. Muriel had an excellent run in the colours cross country but was unable to maintain that form through to the Cross Country Championships due to an injury. Muriel went on to complete the season with another strong performance relative to her personal best in the Track & Field Championships, including finishing second in the combined event championships. These performances at championship level were combined with continual interest in club affairs throughout the year resulting in her election to the position of DUHAC Ladies Track & Field Captain for the following season.
|
| 1999/2000 Season: John Cunniffe |
|
John Cunniffe was a 3rd year Ph.D student in Astrophysics when he won the Iain Morrison Trophy. John had shown outstanding commitment in his quest to lower his race walking personal bests. In this technical and physical event John excelled in both areas and significantly lowered his personal best at the Indoor Championship. John went on to run the cross country season for DUHAC and performed solidly in the midfield whilst still maintaining his walking training. The hard work was rewarded with an intervarsity gold medal at the Track & Field Championships. John's commitment to DUHAC was evident throughout the year with both his readiness to share his significant coaching knowledge and experience with all athletes in DUHAC and giving up time to help the other race walkers within DUHAC prepare for competition. In addition to this and despite not being on the committee John devoted a lot of time to helping out with the organisation of both Colours competition and internal DUHAC events.
|
| 2000/2001 Season: Paddy Cassidy |
|
Paddy Cassidy was in 3rd year Engineering when he won the Iain Morrison Trophy. Paddy not only devoted a lot of time to his training, but took the time to get to know every athlete and making sure that they were enjoying their time in DUHAC and their training. Since the departure of Iain Morrison from intervarsity competition, Paddy has laid claim to the 3 mile leg on the first team in the Road Relay Championships, proving again this season that he was fastest man in a DUHAC vest over the distance. His superior racing knowledge allowed him to score points in the Indoor Championships ahead of athletes who should have been beating him. In his capacity as DUHAC Men's Cross Country Captain, Paddy captained the team to their second win in four years in the Colours cross country. He went on to achieve the highest placing by a DUHAC athlete in the cross country championships since Iain Morrison three years previously. Paddy went on to run very close to his personal best at the Track & Field Championships, despite doubling in the long distance events.
|
| 2001/2002 Season: Aubrey Storey |
|
Aubrey Storey was a 2nd year Ph.D student in Physiology when he won the Iain Morrison Trophy. Aubrey showed commitment to his personal training that enabled him to develop as an athlete throughout the season. His biggest commitment however was in management. His workload as treasurer of DUHAC and his willingness to assist in the organisation of DUHAC, coupled with his contributions to Trinity sport in his capacity as secretary of DUCAC and his development of University sport in his capacity as vice chairman of CUSAI made Aubrey stand out as a very worthy winner of the Iain Morrison trophy. Aubrey earned his place on the first team for the road relays and went on to score vital points in the pole vault at both the indoor and outdoor Track & Field Championships through his perseverance at this technical event. Aubrey placed very well in the cross country, coming in just behind the leading DUHAC men, a placing however that didn't reflect his true ability over cross country.
|
| 2002/2003 Season: Mary McLoone |
|
Mary McLoone was a 3rd year Bachelor in Education student when she won the Iain Morrison Trophy. Since entering Trinity, Mary has shown outstanding commitment to DUHAC both in her contribution to the women's team at the Intervarsity Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships and in her capacity as a committee member. Her talents as a combined events athlete and her triple jump and hurdling ability have been selflessly used to score points for Trinity. Mary scored over 30 individual points at both Track & Field Championships this season, thus ensuring that DUHAC finished a clear second on both occasions. In the outdoor championships she won three individual titles. Mary was awarded Pinks at the end of her second year in Trinity, the highest sporting honour awarded by the College to its sports men and women. For this season Mary was a recipient of a Trinity Sporting Scholarship for her athletic achievements and is the current National U23 Triple Jump Record holder. Her willingness to offer advice and encouragement is appreciated by all.
|
| 2003/2004 Season: Janine Jensen & Stephen Lipson |
|
Janine Jensen was a 2nd year Ph.D student in Economics when she won the Iain Morrison Trophy. Janine, a native of Australia, had entered Trinity two years previously. Her first quest upon arriving in Trinity was to hunt out the Harriers and Athletic Club. She immediately impacted on the Club with a combination of Aussie wit and athletic talent. Her impact was so proactive that within two months she was elected Ladies Harriers Captain of DUHAC, a certain record in recent DUHAC history. Janine’s enthusiasm for running was inspiring. Her style of captaincy succeeded in promoting an environment for fun athletics that benefited DUHAC immeasurably. Her best performances on the running field unfortunately came outside of Varsity competition but this in no way takes away from her performances for DUHAC. It should be pointed out that Janine only returned to running after a six year break shortly prior to coming to Ireland and within 18 months had broken her lifetime PB for 1500m, which was a respectable time to start with. Janine held the Captaincy for two years and her winning of this award capped of a glorious two year period for both her and DUHAC.
A ‘Google’ search for Stephen Lipson on the TCD website (research purposes only) returns over 100 entries, a tribute to Lippo's longevity and enormous contribution to DUHAC and the Physics Department. In eleven years at Trinity, spanning Undergraduate, Ph.D. and Post-Doc, Lippo has made a significant and lasting impact on TCD athletics. A committed behind-the-scenes man, he has an incomparable record of service to DUHAC and varsity athletics. Stephen spent five years on the DUHAC committee, including a year as Men's Captain. He was on the organising committee for IV2001, which received the prestigious CUSAI award for Intervarsity Event of the Year. The IUAA now benefits from his immense experience, with Stephen in his third year as President, having previously spent three years as Secretary, and two years and Vice-President. On the track, Stephen's first love is middle distance running, for which he has represented Trinity in countless cross country races and road relays. He also diversified into walking, earning bronze medals in this event at both the indoor and outdoor championships. Lippo has been a natural mentor and role model to many generations of students. From the Munich Hills to stretching and massage sticks, he has motivated many athletes to produce their best. Rain, hail or shine, we are sure the words, three, two, one, let's cruise will be spoken on College Park for many years to come.
The biography on Stephen Lipson was compiled by Janine Jensen.

| 2004/2005 Season: Aidan Hogan |
|
Aidan Hogan was a 4th year History & Politics student when he was
awarded the Iain Morrison trophy. He has been an active competitor in
the middle distance events for DUHAC since his first year in college,
and held a position of a committee member. Despite his `wild side',
which would provide enough material for a separate volume of short
stories, Aidan has gained a reputation of a selfless racer who always
gave everything on the track. This was reflected in his frequent
selection (3/4) for the first team in the Maynooth Road Relays, and
consistent improvements in his PB for 1500m on the track during his
career in DUHAC. This year saw a miraculous transformation of Aidan from
the aforementioned wild spirit to the exemplary captain. He dedicated
himself to training and to his team completely, sometimes at the expense
of his academic progress. He single-handedly conceived and organized a
highly successful trip to the Hyde Park Road Relays, which was a
definite highlight of the year. His impeccable attendance at training
sessions and thus established personal contacts with athletes enabled
him to assemble strong teams for all intervarsity distance races, and
ultimately lead TCD men to the second place in the Intervarsity Cross
Country, club's best since 2003.
|
| 2005/2006 Season: Leah Butler |
|
Leah Butler was a 4th year TSM student in English & Psychology when she was awarded the Iain Morrison trophy. Leah has been actively involved with the club since her 2nd year in college, and went on to hold the position of the club Secretary for 2 years in a row. Her administrative duties, always performed professionally, never hindered her activism on the track, and she also sought to diversify from her usual distance running into events such as 8Kg weight for distance and the race walk. Always ready to offer her help, advice or encouragement in the organization of club events or in the day-to-day training routine, Leahs contribution was instrumental to the successful running of the club both socially and administratively.
|
| 2006/2007 Season: Fodhla Treacy |
|
Fodhla was a 4th year student of Science when she won the Iain Morrisson Award. Her total of 31 Intervarsity appearances in the DUHAC vest speaks volumes about her commitment to the club and to her training. A very consistent performer she has been decorated with seven Intervarsity medals and has represented the club in a number of disciplines including her favourite 800m, Cross Country, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, 4x200m and 4x400m. Fodhla is obviously a very talented athlete but the real achievement was that she saw the importance of her contribution to the team as a whole, always willing to do it for the greater good. Her contribution off the track was equally as impressive. She was on the committee for three years running and held a Captains position for two of these. In this time, Fodhla contributed greatly to the running and organisation of the club and was always welcoming to new members. Never one to shy away from a party either! Her positive influence on the club was immense and greatly appreciated by all.
|
| 2007/2008 Season: Stuart Greene |
|
Stu (or Stu poo as we like to call him!) has been one of the finest stalwarts the club has seen in its long history (and I include Ronnie and Lippo in that). What this man has done for the club in the past 4 years has been nothing short of remarkable, both in athletic and organisational terms.
Track and Field captain during his 2nd and 3rd years in college, Stu was the epicentre of everything that was good in the club.
His work ethic was nothing short of crazy, as he tirelessly devoted serious amounts of time for the betterment of the club (often at a cost to his college work!).
A great motivator, it was always his dream to captain an intervarsity winning team....and boy did he try.
Stu probably spent more call credit in the weeks leading up to the varisties than a BESS girl would in a year.
Where Stu would most like to be remembered is in his athletic achievements.
He brought the sport of pole vault to a new level in Trinity and is the club record holder both indoor and outdoor.
He has a medal tally of 6 individual medals, as well as a win in the Celtic T&F and a number of relay medals (not exactly sure of the number but one thing is for certain - he is one of the fiercest competitors you're ever likely to come up against in a relay!).
To summarise the man - if we had a club full of Stu's we would whip DCU's bums every year and be the best and biggest club in Trinity.
|
| 2008/2009 Season: Neil Cullen |
|
The award of the Iain Morrison Trophy to Neil Cullen stems not from any particular athletic
achievement as a member of DUHAC but more from his dedication and effort as a member
of the Club. He was a Committee member in 2007-08 and the Men’s Athletics Captain
in 2008-09. In all he put in 15 appearances for DUHAC in IUAA Indoors and Outdoors
Championships, filling in any gap in entries if there was a chance of winning some points
for TCD in the team championships. Always up for a challenge he competed at 100 m, 100
mH, 400 m, long jump, high jump, shot putt and pentathlon, as well as in 4 x 100 m and 4
x 400 m relays. He led by example and encouraged every athlete in the Club to give of his/
her best as that was all one could ever ask of anyone. At competitions he supported his
fellow athletes. He was proud to have represented Trinity College and DUHAC. His happy
nature, enthusiasm, motivation and determination infused a joy of competing into his fellow
clubmates irrespective of finishing place.
|
| 2009/2010 Season: Claire McGlynn |
|
Between season 2005-06 and 2009-10 Claire put in 38 appearances in the colours of DUHAC
in events covering road relays, sprints, pole vault and weight for distance. She epitomised the
true spirit of first class DUHACian! In 2010, DUHAC hosted the IUAA Outdoors Track & Field
Championships. Claire took on the role of Chair of the Organising Committee. These Intervarsity
Championships marked the quasquicentenary of the Club. Early on she made it absolutely clear
(!!) to all members of the Committee that no stone was to be left unturned to ensure that the
championships would be a resounding success. In respect of sponsorship, substantial goodie bags,
officials, risk assessment and all minutiae, every "i" was dotted and "t" crossed. Even the rain
Gods were contacted and threatened to ensure two glorious days of first class competition! Claire
led, supported, encouraged, cajoled, enticed, exalted and even seduced every member of the
Committee and every DUHAC athlete to perform. Impossible, Can't be Done, It's a No No - Claire
would hear none of it. With a winning smile she ensured that the championships ran smoothly and
efficiently, earning the highest of plaudits from discerning critics such as Enda Fitzpatrick of DCU.
The final proof of Claire's leadership was the award to DUHAC of the top honour in the multi-day
event category of the CUSAI Inter-Collegiate Event of the Year Awards 2009-10 for the organisation
of the IUAA Outdoors Track and Field Championships.
|
| 2010/2011 Season: Bryony Treston |
|
Bryony Treston epitomises everything one would ever want of a DUHAC club member. She was
Women’s Harriers Captain in 2007-08 and 2008-09. She then took on the role of Hon. Treasurer in
2009-10 and was Women’s Athletics Captain in 2010-11. During her years in College from academic
year 2006-07 she put in 28 appearances for DUHAC in Road Relays, Cross-Country, Indoors T@F
and Outdoors T@F Intervarsity Championships. She won team Silver twice and Bronze once in the
Road Relays and team Silver five teams and Gold once in the Cross Country. Her tally of individual
medals in Indoors and Outdoors T@F is impressive by any standards – 3 Gold, 5 Silver and 5 bronze
– plus her individual Silver medal in Cross Country, beaten by the epic dip on the line at the National
Aquatic Centre, Blanchardstown in 2011. She represented the IUAA twice in Cross-Country at
Strathallan School in 2008, captaining the Women’s team, and at Caernafon in 2009. She held TCD
records for the 5000 m and the 3000m S/C. In summary, Bryony has been an inspirational DUHACian
as an athlete, captain, club member and ever smiling individual!
|
| 2011/2012 Season: Darragh McCashin |
|
To call Darragh the corner stone of Trinity Athletics wouldn't be far from the
truth. Darragh has done it all for Duhac; a former captain (twice) and a current
committee member. He has been vital in the organisation of all your favourite Duhac
events through out his many years at the club. Not only has he preformed behind
the scenes but also on the athletics fields. With many great results at Colours and
Varsity events, he is a true inspiration to any up and coming Athlete. His everlasting
commitment at both training and races is evident in his huge improvements through out
the years, reminiscent to the great Ian Morrison him self. It is only fitting that we award
a true Duhac legend with the clubs most prestigious honour.
|
| 2012/2013 Season: Garret Dunne |
|
Garret "Van Wilder" Dunne has become an institution in DUHAC not
just because of his extended undergraduate degree, but because of
his enthusiasm and devotion to making DUHAC the club it is today.
It's no coincidence that, while he has been captain, the club have had
some fantastic results not just individually, but as a team in the past
couple of years.
Throughout my undergraduate, I have witnessed the club go from
strength to strength mainly through an emphasis on participation. In
his two years as Track captain, Gar has encouraged everyone who
has expressed even a remote interest in running/throwing/jumping or
even walking to get involved with club sessions.
Rain, hail or shine he has been ever-present on the track, always
there for advice or a bit of banter, and has been known to throw the
cat amongst the pigeons! Gar eats, sleeps, and breaths DUHAC, so
much so, that he has been known to plug some sporting analogies into his Political science essays!
I feel that the "Prince of DUHAC" is thoroughly deserving of this award
for his sheer commitment
and passion to the club.
|
| 2013/2014 Season: Irene Gorman |
|
From the day Irene joined the club as a distinguished hockey player, she has been an irrepresible example of what it means to be a Duhacer.
Irene's commitment to training has seen her develop into one of Duhac's most sucessful athletes in recent years and she has steadily improved her PBs over 1,500m, 1 mile, 3k Steeplechase and 3,000m.
This steady progression culminated in a tremendous performance at this year's Indoor Intervarsities where she lowered an already-formidable 1,500m PB by 10+ seconds to take 3rd place. She is also one of the few athletes to hold a medal from 3 of the 4 Intervarsity competitions (Road, XC and Indoors).
Outside of Intervarsity conpetitions, she is a former Irish u23 champion in the steeplechase and was on the cusp of international selection for the European Cross Country Championships for years.
However, as prominent and competitive as Irene is on the field, she is equally as renowned for the wonderful personality she displays off of it.
Irene is truly driven by her love for Duhac, and thrives on the sucesses and improvements of her teammates as much as her own.
As Ladies Harriers Captain in 2012/13 she was a permanent fixture on the 6 mile runs, brightening up the dark Monday/Thursday evenings.
She was (and remains to be) ever present at Intervals and Hills, where she can be seen offering tireless encouragement and praise, and ensuring that everybody present is enjoying the sport at a level which they are comfortable with.
A testament to her inclusive and welcoming efforts at training are the sheer numbers that represented TCD women at Intervarsity competitions when she was captain.
There were 3+ ladies teames entered in Road Relays and 15 girls entered in Cross Country, which was more than a quarter of the total number of competitors!
Not only did her tremendous captaincy see an increase in numbers though, but also in results. Under Irene, the Ladies Harriers were 3rd in Road Relays and 1st in Cross Country, an achievement made all the more notable by the fact that TCD Ladies had only won Cross Country once in the previous 31 years!
To round off the year, Duhac's ladies squad then claimed 6 medals (3 gold) in the distance events at Outdoor T&F in truly dominant fashion.
As an athlete, Irene has been terrific. As a Captain; superlative. She has attained a standard that all of us in Duhac strive for and she is truly deserving of the Iain Morrison Award.
